Meet the teacher - Ash

Please click here to see an overview of what we will be learning this year. You can find out more detailed information by visiting our Curriculum Information Documents for Year 6.

Our topic for Autumn Terms 1 and 2 is Stars and Stripes. We will be learning about the geography of North America along with a little history of this area of the world including the lifestyle of Native American tribes. To tie in with Black history month,  we will be learning about the life of Martin Luther King and his impact on American society. American artists studied will include Jasper Johns and Any Warhol. Our class reader is Holes by Louis Sachar set in contrasting locations of Texas and New York which will also support out learning about the USA. We are also looking forward to a visit at the start of October by a tech company with a robotics workshop.

PE days are Monday and Thursdays - both will be outside at the moment so children will need warm clothes and trainers on both days. Homework will be set as usual on Wednesdays to be completed by the following Monday. For most children, this will be online.

All the children have signed a Reading Together Contract in which we promise to read to them for at least 10 minutes a day and in return they promise to read for a minimum of 10 minutes 5 times a week. Please encourage your child to honour this commitment. Reading records are collected in every Monday and should show 5 entries of which at least one has been countersigned by an adult. It is crucially important that your child reads regularly at home and that the reading record is kept up to date.

Mrs Thomas will be covering all day Thursdays and Mrs Watt's PPA time on Wednesdays. We are supported in class by Mrs Nelis in the mornings.

We are very pleased that the children have returned to school after such a long absence with such positive attitudes. We have a long way to go and lots to do to prepare them for Year 7. They will need to work hard and maintain focus if they are to reach their potential, but we have every faith in them. This is very much a team effort - school and home and we thank you in advance for your continued support.
