Year 4 Home Learning

Below are activities for you and your child to do during this time at home.  These are what we would cover in school, so completing as many of them as possible will ensure your child’s progress continues:

Topic

We are currently sewing our rainforest animals so if you have the appropriate materials at home to practise any of the stitches (running stitch, over stitch or cross stitch) please feel free to do so.

English

SPaG

There is a wealth of resources found here:

https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resources/english-main-subjects-parents/punctuation-english-main-subjects-parents/punctuation-year-4-ages-8-9-english-main-subjects-parents

Twinkl covers many of the aspects that we have looked at in class.  We have studied all areas listed so could try any of the activities.

Writing

http://www.pobble365.com/

This resource is brilliant when writing freely.  You can use the picture as a stimulus and there are also opportunities to improve sentences, answer questions and tackle the sentence challenges.

Reading

Please use this opportunity to read as regularly and widely as you can.  You could write reviews on what you’ve read, write a quiz, identify themes and don’t forget one of your year 4 objectives is to ask questions about what you’ve read too.

Maths

You are familiar with mymaths.co.uk from homework.  You can look through the online lessons (that we sometimes use in class) to remind you how to tackle questions.  We suggest you focus on the following lessons and have a go at the homework attached to them.

Under the heading Number

Multiplication and division:

  • Y4 Multiplying by 10 and 100
  • Y4 Dividing by 10 and 100
  • Y4 Doubling and halving
  • Y4 Short division
  • Y4 Short multiplication

Addition and subtraction:

  • Y4 More written methods

Under the heading Measurement

Measurement:

  • Y4 Time 2

This is a great opportunity for you to really nail those times tables!  You can practise by using TT Rockstars, other online games that you can find or watching songs on YouTube.  Make sure you focus on the ones you don’t know rather than just the ones you know already. Ask someone at home to test you! Remember, you need to know the inverse division facts as well as the times tables.

Practical maths

Being at home will give you lots of time to practise some practical maths.  If you have a ruler or tape measure, trying measuring things around the home.  Can you measure in cm and convert to mm? Can you do it the other way round?  Can you find the perimeter of a 2D object?  If you have weighing scales, see if you can find the mass of different objects in grams and kilograms.

Science

This term we are learning about Sound in Science.

The BBC have some informative and fun clips, which accompanying quizzes:  https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zgffr82

We have been using Twinkl planning for some of our lessons.  We have just completed lesson 2 as a class.  There are some fun activities to do in here:
https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/tp2-s-157-new-planit-science-y4-sound-unit-pack

Lesson 3:  Make your own straw pipes

Lesson 4:  Make a string telephone

Home learning activities:  Good vibrations sound game and Sound survey (we have done one of this around school, so will be interesting to compare).
